What is Orange Shirt Day?Orange shirt day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013.
It all comes back to the story of Phyllis who's Orange T-shirt was taken away from her when she arrived at her residential school to be forced to wear the uniform. |
Why on September 30th?
The date of September 30th was chosen because it was on that day that children were taken away from their home to be sent in residential schools.
Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.
